5 NYC Winter Wonderland Experiences

The holidays are over: the eggnog has been drunk, decorations put away, and New Years resolutions have been made and broken. What do you do with the rest of your winter? Don’t fret - there are still many things to do in the New York metropolitan area to make your winter magical. We have compiled a list of five ways to spend the day enjoying frosty fun that are just a short trip away from our Hoboken at Novia property.
Central Park: Sledding, Puppetry, and The Tavern on the Green

Central Park is famous for its green spaces and Shakespearean shows in the summertime, but there is also a plethora of things for the whole family to do there in the winter. Once Jack Frost provides us with more than six inches of snow on the ground, Central Park opens Pilgrim Hill and Cedar Hill for sledding. Cedar Hill has a lower portion that is great for starting sledders; more advanced sledders will want to head down to the more elevated section. If you’re seeking even more thrills, Pilgrim Hill has the steepest slopes but is also typically the most crowded.

After a morning of sledding, take the kids to see the marionette show at the Swedish Cottage. Now through February, they are showing a modern take on Sleeping Beauty called, Wake Up, Daisy! which tells the story of Daisy, a vibrant young girl living in an apartment overlooking Central Park.

Looking for activities that are less family and more romance? Grab your significant other and take a horse drawn carriage tour of Central Park - enjoy the snow covered hills and fields, watch the ice skaters and check out Belvedere Castle in the snow. Be sure to end it at one of the most iconic restaurants in New York City: Central Park’s Tavern on the Green.

Rockefeller Center and Alice’s Teacup: Ice Skating and a Cuppa

One of the most iconic NYC things to do in winter is to go ice skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center. It is rumored that the idea for The Rink was inspired by a Depression-era skate salesman who demonstrated his product by skating on the frozen water of the Rockefeller Center fountain. Whether or not this was true, ice skating in Rockefeller Center has been a winter tradition since 1936. Ticket prices range from $11.00 - $61.00, depending on the date and times. It gets rather crowded, so you’ll want to buy your tickets ahead of time and show up early.

After getting frosty out on the ice, head on down to Alice’s Teacup to warm up with a cup of tea and a scone. Both of Alice’s two locations are inspired by the world of Lewis Carroll. Take a break from the cold and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea complete with sandwiches, scones, and clotted cream, while surrounded by the “mad” decor straight out of Alice in Wonderland. After getting frosty out on the ice, head on down to Alice’s Teacup to warm up with a cup of tea and a scone. Broadway Week and Restaurant Week: Dinner and a Show

Manhattan has established itself as one of the cultural capitals of the world, and a large part of that is due to the shining lights of Broadway. This January, you are in luck, as Broadway Week is January 17-February 12, 2023. During this week, select shows will be offering 2-for-1 tickets. The system varies as to whether you are buying through Ticketmaster with a discount code or straight from the theater, so be sure to check back here after January 10, 2023, when shows are announced and tickets go on sale. Hand in hand with these great show discounts is Restaurant Week New York City , which opens for reservations on January 10, 2023 and runs January 17 - February 12, 2023. Restaurant Week New York City allows you to eat at NYC’s best restaurants for bargain prices. Every Winter (Jan/Feb) and Summer (July/Aug), some of NYC’s best restaurants offer prix-fixe meals for $30, $45 or $60.

Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and The Russian Tea Room: Getting Fancy

Immerse yourself in culture and old world New York with a meal at The Russian Tea Room and a night at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center . Enjoy an afternoon tea with sandwiches, sweet pastries, and cakes or an early dinner with a menu that includes borscht, caviar and Beouf Wellington.

Follow your meal by crossing the street to Carnegie Hall, where they have concerts from world class musicians, or go around the block to enjoy offerings from the various venues in Lincoln Center, such as The Magic Flute at The Metropolitan Opera or Yuja Wang, Lindberg and Beethoven at the New York Philharmonic. Whichever venue you choose, you are sure to be treated to a night of refinement and culture.
